Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, is the home of winter racing in America from January through April and enjoys a reputation for first class racing. Here, at Gulfstream, the Florida Derby was first run in 1952. The original clubhouse of that date has had many additions. In 2004, the grandstand and clubhouse were totally updated and renovated with a $130 million price tag. In that year, also, slot machines were approved and Las Vegas style slots came to Gulfstream. The Florida Derby is held at the end of March and is an American thoroughbred horse race for 3 year olds with a 1 million dollar purse. Winners of the Florida Derby usually go on to compete in the Kentucky Derby in May. Two additional graded stakes races are also run at Gulfstream, The Gulfstream Park handicap held in March and the Gulfstream Park Turf handicap held in February.
Gulfstream Park, Racing and Casino has a range of amenities for every budget. There is lots of free parking and free grandstand seating and a food court on the first floor. The Casino is on the second floor, which also boasts the 1,200 seat Ten Palms Restaurant and Silks Simulcast Center with simulcasts from top racetracks around the world. For fine dining, there is Christine Lee’s legendary steak and seafood restaurant on the third floor.
